How elephants call each other by name

Elephants call each other by name just like people do. Scientists recorded 470 calls from 101 elephants in Kenya. Each call had a name tag that told who it was for. This name was not just an imitation of the receiver. Elephants use made up labels, not copied sounds. Dolphins and parrots copy the receiver's call. Elephants are different. They use arbitrary names. When elephants heard their own name call they reacted strongly. Calls meant for others got little response. The study used machine learning to find the name parts. Researchers from Colorado State University and other groups did the work.
