A special shoe plate kept lowering runners' heart rates for eighty minutes. Scientists tested ten trained men on treadmills. They wore carbon-plated Nike Alphafly 3 shoes or standard Pegasus 41 shoes. The carbon plate improved running economy by four and a half percent at fourteen kilometers per hour. That advantage lasted the full eighty minutes. Runners had lower oxygen use, heart rate, blood lactate, and felt less effort. The plate helped them run half a kilometer per hour faster before hitting their lactate threshold. The effect did not fade as they got tired.
